Question for Thought

Question: For each of the three energy transfer processes (convection, radiation, and conduction), describe at least one climatic process that transfers energy in this manner.

Convection: Wind currents and ocean currents are both media for the convection of energy. The Gulf Stream, for example, is a warm Atlantic Ocean current that plays a large role in warming Northern Europe.

Radiation: The energy from the sun is a prime example of energy transfer through radiation. The hot, dry climate found in the Sahara Desert is largely due to radiant heat energy directly from the sun.

Conduction: An example of conduction is the transfer of energy through soil. Particles within the soil collide with each other directly, transferring kinetic energy.
