As you interact with the Design Our Climate simulation (DOCs) look at the "Common Sliders" at the bottom right of the pages for each of the five sectors. In 2100 the global population is estimated to be billion people. The projected population in 2100 is uncertain as many factors like future trends in fertility, mortality, international migration and environmental factors such as the rise in the spread of diseases and natural disasters all play a role.

Your Turn

Using the "Global Population" slider in the Design Our Climate simulation (DOCs) what do you notice about the greenhouse gas reduction area when the population is decreased to 8 billion? When it is increased to 15 billion people?

Question for Thought

Question: There are complex reasons why global population can change. Consider the important drivers that affect population. Can you think of some possible reasons why population may increase or decrease? Once you have thought of your own ideas, click on the box below to see examples.

What could affect our population?
Access to family planning
Food shortages, global food supply
Unchecked climate change; extrem weather, drought, rising sea levels
Education
Spread of diseases
Birth & mortality rates
